Each day of the course runs from 10.00am until 4.00pm

Where:

It will take place at The Barn Countryside Centre, Philips Park, Park Lane, Whitefield, M45 7QJ, making use of the Incredible Edible Prestwich and District gardens on site.

What is it?

A 2 day course certified by the Permaculture Association and delivered at Philips Park in Whitefield by Liz Postlethwaite, permaculture designer and director of Small Things Creative Projects. Read Liz’s profile on the Permaculture Association website here. And explore her permaculture design portfolio here.

As well as developing specialist practice exploring permaculture design, art and creativity Liz has also spent the last fifteen years using permaculture design to create her own small, abundant, ecologically connected garden at the back of the terraced house that she shares with her family. She is particularly interested in growing edibles and holds a Diploma in Urban Agriculture from the University of Havana.

The course takes the things that Liz has learned as a grower, and has been designed specifically with domestic scale gardeners and growers in mind. It will introduce the basic concepts of Permaculture and explore how these ideas can be used to create an abundant and regenerative garden which is grounded in place through deeper connection to ecology and natural systems.

What is Permaculture Design?

A set of tools, based around the ethics of earth care, people care and fairshare, which help us reconnect with the natural world and to create projects and work with a strong ethical, ecological and regenerative foundation.

Who is it for?

Anybody who would like to explore how Permaculture Design could help to create a garden or growing space which is more abundant and regenerative, and which is grounded in place through deeper connection to ecology and natural systems.

We will:

  • Learn about the permaculture ethics and principles and think about how they can be used to help create a garden or growing space.
  • Learn more about permaculture design and how it can be used at a domestic scale in a garden or growing space.
  • Explore different techniques that you may use in a permaculture garden.
  • Learn more about the permaculture network and explore how it can support you to expand your permaculture learning beyond the course.

Getting there:

The site is easily accessible by car, but harder to reach by public transport. For people arriving by public transport we will be able to arrange collections from the closest Metrolink station (Whitefield)

Session Resources:

All sessions will be supported by notes and copies of any slides.

Refreshments:

Hot drinks will be provided throughout the course, with break time snacks. Participants are invited to bring food to share for lunch each day.

How much does the course cost?

Organisation / Pay it forward : £200

Full : £140

Reduced rate : £70

There are also a number of free bursary places – see the booking form for more information.

How do I decide what to pay?

We choose to use sliding scale to encourage people to pay according to their available resources. It encourages those with greater financial privilege to contribute more, allowing those with less access, to pay according to their means. This allows us to run our courses while making accessibility as broad as possible. This image, based on the Green Bottle sliding scale may help you decide which price to choose.

Green Bottle is a Sliding Scale model that is inclusive of different financial experiences. Developed by community healing practitioner Alexis J. Cunningfolk, the Green Bottle Method is an economic justice tool that enables participants to adjust payment based on access to resources.

If you feel that you would be able to make a contribution which is different to the outlined figures please let us know when you book your place.

The course is for you if:

  • You want to start thinking about different ways to create a garden.
  • You want to explore new ways of doing things in your garden as the ways that we have been doing things are not working anymore.
  • You want to grow in ways which leave a legacy for future generations that is more positive than the one that they currently face.
  • You believe a better future is possible and would like to think about how your garden or growing space may be part of this.

Feedback from previous participants:

“Really inspirational. Thank you so much! Fantastically accessible and brilliant teaching / great facilitation. I feel inspired to continue down the permaculture journey of learning!”

I loved everything. Very good structure and pace. Great safe space to ask questions and relate details into own experience.

I liked meeting like minded people… Learning things abour Permaculture I hadn’t realised… I liked how accessible Liz made the ideas of Permaculture.

“I loved spending a lot of time in nature and learning how to translate observations into learning, not only in the garden but in other areas of life.

It is amazing finding out how much is happening – projects, initiatives…! It’s inspirational and gives me hope.
