The Island is a brand new project supported using public funding by Arts Council England. Working alongside residents at Shore Green extra care housing scheme in Wythenshawe we are using The Tempest as a starting point to explore the nature of artistic collaboration between older people and professional artists. Shore Green is run by Irwell Valley Housing Association. It is a unique development and is Irwell Valley’s specialist service providing exceptional accommodation, support and care to older people with memory loss and dementia to enable them to live independent lives as long as possible.
During the three month project Shore Green residents will take part in weekly workshops alongside professional artists using a variety of theatre making techniques to investigate the story of The Tempest. These will include puppetry, dance, creative writing, improvisation and scenography to name a few. This will culminate in a two week creative residency where all these ideas will be brought together to create a unique performance encapsulating the residents’ and artists’ journey.
This project is the continuation of our long term commitment to work with, by and for older people, and intends to explore best practice in the context of arts and dementia.
